The Cat and the Spy

newbeautyandbeast The Cat and the SpyK.M. Shea re-tells the timeless fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast in a unique way. A witch curses a member of the royal household, Prince Severin, who has become a black-furred beast with the head of a cat. His teeth are too big for his mouth, his fingernails are claws, and he has the hind legs of a feline. His entire staff is cursed, too, each becoming mute and their faces obstructed by masks. The only way this curse can be bro ken is by the true love of a woman.

Severin has tried on numerous occasions to have the spell broken, but each time the women have only loved his money and his prestige. So, the prince has given up on ever becoming normal again, but his staff is hopeful.

Then, one day, through the skylight of Chanceux Chateau, falls an intruder, Elle, a young woman who claims to be a curious local trying to get a look at the infamous prince. However, she is covering up her true intentions. Her accidental fall causes a severe broken leg, which staff physician Duval declares would take months to mend.

Elle finds herself as the prince’s guest in his home making friends with his staff, who all seem delighted she’s there compared to Prince Severin’s indifference. Initially, she expects her host to be a brutal and suspicious man, but during her long stay she peals aside her prejudices to uncover an individual capable of tenderness, loyalty, and love, especially for his staff.

K.M. Shea does an amazing job of characterization as Prince Severin and Elle slowly get to know each other and a warm friendship develops. But how could Elle, a dog lover, ever fall for a monstrous cat?

With unexpected plot twists readers will find themselves turning pages to see how Elle maintains a deception to protect her true identity while Prince Severin, a staunch supporter of his brother, the crown prince, tries to avert hostilities with neighboring kingdoms.
