The Koolura Series: YA Fantasy at It’s Best

Twenty-four years ago author Michael Thal began what would become The Koolura Series. His prime motivation at the time was to get his daughter Channie excited about reading. Then in the sixth grade, she promised to read the book upon its publication. Good for her word, even though she was twenty-eight years old, Channie read and loved The Legend of Koolura. She wasn’t the only one, so when his youngest daughter, Koren was in college, Thal traveled to her campus and the two explored the mountains outside Santa Barbara. They discovered a beautiful lake and a summer camp. That was the spark needed for Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback. A few years later, Channie, Koren, and the author traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico for cousin Adam’s wedding. They visited a Mayan archeological site, Monte Alban, where the writer got a brilliant idea. Koolura gets transported back in time to meet the ancient Mayans.

Now you know the story behind The Koolura Series, here are blurbs and reader reviews of each book in the series.

Through his main character, Koolura Akopyan, a young sixth grade girl, Thal explores the complexities of school kid friendships, the adjustments needed to manage in today’s multicultural classrooms, and the importance of good values.

Jennifer Leese of the Best Reviews said, “The Legend of Koolura is a wonderfully written book that tells the story of friendships, rejections, and of course, magic powers. Koolura and her story will keep your middle grade reader turning the pages. Editorial Review

Red City Review says: Koolura Akopyan just graduated from the sixth grade, and, for the most part, she seems like any other “tween.” She likes popular music, movies, gossiping with her friends, and spending time with cute boys. But there’s much more to this young Armenian gal than meets the eye–and, when you find out her secrets, you’ll be shocked, surprised, and thoroughly entertained.

Koolura and The Mystery at Camp Saddleback is the second entry in Michael L. Thal’s Koolura series, which finds the familiar protagonist summering at an exclusive camp where mischief and mystery abound. Like any other kid at a new camp, Koolura has to deal with the personality conflicts she has with the other girls, as well as with the downright dirty tricks the male campers play on them from the nearby “Boys’ Mountain.” But some of those tricks are a little too dangerous and underhanded, and, when their lives are threatened, Koolura and her camp friends realize that someone else is to blame…but who? Using her intelligence, problem-solving skills, and incredible psychic gifts, Koolura slowly but surely gets to the bottom of things and figures out who’s causing the ruckus at camp–and, after all is said and done, she forgives the perpetrator and moves on to further forge the friendships created during her compelling coming of age.
Koolura and the Mayans page 001 The Koolura Series: YA Fantasy at It's BestThe author, Michael Thal, is near deaf. He lost his hearing around the time he started writing the Koolura Series. Perhaps that is why he includes a deaf character, Leila Marvi, into his stories. He introduces Leila in Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback and brings her back as a featured character in Koolura and the Mayans. Since Thal is near fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) he makes sure Koolura and Leila communicate in this beautiful silent language.
Koolura and the Mayans was the Gold medal winner in the 2018 eLit Awards Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction and the Second Place winning title in the 2016 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards- Middle Grade Fiction.

Koolura is no ordinary girl. Neither is her best friend Leila. While visiting Mexico, the girls discover a device which hurtles them back in time to an early Mayan civilization. The Mayans have troubles of their own—the alien Aquari people have all but enslaved them. They need a goddess to set them free. Could Koolura be the one?

Editorial Review
Arya Fomonyuy for Readers’ Favorite had this to say about book three in the Koolura Series:

Koolura and the Mayans by Michael Thal is the third book in the Koolura series, an exciting story that will take readers on a historic ride back into the old Maya civilization. Koolura and her friend, Leila, are just two young teens visiting Mexico. They stumble on a device that allows them to travel back in time. They are thrust into an early Maya civilization, whose people are enslaved by the Aquari. The people hope for a goddess who could set them free. Could Koolura be this goddess?

Although Koolura and the Mayans is written for a pre-teen audience, it was fun to read as an adult. Michael Thal’s characters are awesome and I enjoyed Koolura and Leila, two girls who are smart and very ingenious. They make a great team. Readers will enjoy watching them evolve through the story. The author seems to create a whole new culture around the Maya and the story feels so real, reading about the people and the challenges they face. At the level of style, this book is beautifully accomplished. First off, the reader will notice the gorgeous accessible writing, composed of short and easy-to-understand sentences. The writing also features great descriptions of characters and setting. The descriptive prose creates powerful images in the minds of readers. I enjoyed the well-crafted dialogues which make the characters come to life. Readers will love the adventure, the drama, the conflict, and the entertaining nature of this story. I enjoyed it!

Just click on the links and I’m sure you’ll enjoy Thal’s books, available in print and on Kindle, as much has the reviewers.
