High School Students Seek Love and Revenge with Voodoo

book cover High School Students Seek Love and Revenge with VoodooRevenge, Lust & Voodoo by Dina Rae tells the story of Lucien Nazaire, an old Voodoo priest from Haiti. He lives in a retirement community in Wisconsin and meets sixteen-year old Jake La Rue, who he recruits to become his apprentice to carry out his life’s work.

Jake is an orphan living with his abusive Uncle Pete, his very young wife, Aunt Leah (who is about four years older than Jake), and their baby daughter Rhianna. The cruelties include beatings and psychological abuse. When Lucien gives the boy an education in Voodoo, Jake wants to concoct spells that will put an end to his uncle’s reign of terror.

At Freemont High School, Jake makes a friend of Henry, a classmate with Asperger’s Syndrome. Though his new friend is quite intelligent, his autism risks setting off an array of behavioral problems the author describes incredibly well.

Things become tense when Henry has a run in with Rio Garcia, the most popular jock at Freemont, over Brittany, Rios’s current flame. Jake also has a heartthrob—his gorgeous aunt. To get the attention of their hearts’ desires Lucien teaches the boys how to prepare a love potion, and that is when everything begins to unravel.

Revenge, Lust & Voodoo is a 398-page novel that is written with an imaginative flare. The characters are mostly believable, though a few of the lesser characters feel forced and one-dimensional. The plot moves quickly, and definitely holds the reader’s attention, however, this reviewer found many editorial gaffs and felt the book could have been cut shorter. A good editor could have easily fixed this book’s problems.

The research involved in writing Revenge, Lust & Voodoo is very impressive. If readers have any interest in the paranormal or a curiosity about Voodoo, this is the primer for them.
