The Birthday Gift
My grandson Jordan turned 9 last week. His birthday party is on Sunday. My problem: What to buy him? Last year I bought something which I’m sure he didn’t like. Deaf, I can’t understand a word out of his mouth, but body language is very informative. In the past I’ve consulted with my daughter regarding what Jordan would enjoy. Channie has been wrong almost every time, so this year I decided to consult with the boy’s best friend and cousin, Ezra, also my grandson.

“Ezra,” I asked, “what would Jordan like for his birthday?”
Ezra was quick to respond, “Minecraft Creeper Action Figure.” This bit of information didn’t get through to me so I opened my Amazon app and he pointed to the toy his cousin would enjoy; which I bought immediately.
Two days later the package arrived. I knew what was inside and didn’t need to do anything but place it on my dresser until Sunday.
The next day, another package was dropped at my door. I couldn’t imagine what it was, so opened it to satisfy my curiosity. It was Jordan’s Minecraft birthday gift. What was in the package on my dresser?
I didn’t waste any time guessing. I rushed to the dresser top and tore the gift open, then had a good laugh.
Two months ago, I ordered something I couldn’t find at Ralphs, the grocery store nearest me—skinless and boneless sardines in olive oil. I was poised to give a case of sardines to a nine-year-old for his birthday. Can you imagine the look on his face if the second package hadn’t arrived on time? I was thinking about giving him the sardines anyway to see what he would do. However, I won’t because the child’s sense of humor is still in a dormant state.
