Alternative Futures

UnknownAbbey has an IQ off the charts. She’s logical and grounded in the scientific method. So when older brother Simon’s behavior becomes odder than normal, she and twin brother, Caleb, follow him up Coventry Hill to a cluster of “living stones”. Suddenly, after Simon walks over the stones, he disappears out of thin air. That’s when everything Abbey suspected to be true about the world is thrown out the door to be replaced by magic and witchcraft.

A Pair of Docks by Jennifer Ellis is the first in a series of books—The Derivatives of Displacement. Through the eyes of Abbey readers are transported through time to alternate futures or perhaps universes. The book is fast paced and keeps readers riveted whether they are teens or adult readers.

My only criticism of the novel is that a few threads weren’t answered and by the end of the book, more questions popped up without resolution. This was done on purpose, for once A Pair of Docks is read, its sequel, A Quill Ladder, is waiting in the wings.
