A 21st Century American is Enslaved

Sharon Ledwith’s YA time travel series, The Last Timekeepers, tells the tale of time travelers being sent back in time via a portal to stop an evil entity’s plans on changing the future. The Last Timekeepers and the Noble Slave is the fourth and most recent addition to this fun time travel series.

I taught history for many years making sure to cover the antebellum South and the horrors of slavery. The Last Timekeepers and the Noble Slave would be a perfect addition my classroom library.

Eleven-year-old genius Drake Bailey and his Timekeeper crew are sent back to pre-civil war Georgia to investigate a problem with the time stream. Once they arrive in rural Georgia during the late 1850s, Drake is abducted by an unscrupulous taskmaster, O’Hara, who sells the young African American boy into slavery on the Taylor Plantation. There Drake learns about other slaves and discovers a pair that may be his ancestors. However, the mission is to search for a king and when found, the pieces will fall together.

In her 244-page novel, Ledwith unfolds a story that kept this reader engrossed. I did find keeping all the characters straight in my head, difficult, and was confused why the characters traveled through time dressed for a party.

With that said, Ledwith shows the horrors of slavery and the ignorance of the uneducated populace believing in voodoo, ghosts, and spells. The Last Timekeepers and the Noble Slave would be an excellent addition to any classroom’s library, especially in American History classes for supplementary reading.
