Author Bio

Evonne photo Amelia, the Merballs and the Emerald Cannon: Character InterviewEvonne Blanchard was born and raised in England. She met her husband, an American whilst they were both volunteering at a children’s orphanage in Guatemala.  The writer lives north of Boston, Massachusetts with her husband and their two daughters, Lydia and Gwendolyn.  Other additions to the household include a crazy puppy called Bailey, a lovely cat called Arthur, and lots of fish!

The author has been fascinated by space ever since she was a little girl, mesmerized by clips of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon. As a teenager, War of the Worlds, by H.G Wells became one of her favorite books and she adores the movie Mars Attacks.

About the Series

When it came to creating her own aliens, the Blanchard decided on the warm and fuzzy type, rather than the war-like Martians. Uglesnoo, her main alien character is from Pluto. He’s very friendly and nice but a little crazy too! This was the beginning of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures, starring Amelia and her alien friend Uglesnoo, from Pluto in a series of ten exciting space adventures for children, ages 5-10.

Uglesnoo’s sister is very sick.  The only cure is a repelling crystal from Neptune.  To obtain the crystal Amelia and Uglesnoo must travel to the Moon, Sun and all the planets in the solar system.

Evonne’s favorite planet -or to be more accurate dwarf planet- is Pluto, because it has a blue sky and glaciers just like Earth! She was not happy when Pluto was downgraded. Uglesnoo, her alien creation from Pluto is still mad at the decision.  “Pluto is the most important place in the solar system.  It’s where everyone goes for their vacation!” He agrees with Alan Stern, a leading NASA scientist, “This definition (of Pluto as a dwarf planet) stinks…!”

The author is currently working on the fourth book in the series, Amelia, the Snapperjacks and the Molten Maze.  This book is set on the Sun. How will Amelia and Uglesnoo manage to land on the boiling hot Sun, trade with the aliens, find the jars of Snapperjack honey and continue their quest to save Uglesnoo’s sister? Find out… in Amelia’s next amazing space adventure!

Character Interview: Amelia Speaks Out

Here we interview Amelia, star of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures. She talks to us about the newly released third book, Amelia, the Merballs and the Emerald Cannon and the series in general.

  1. Tell us how your life has changed since your eight birthday.

My life has changed so much.  I’ve had so many adventures!  It’s been really exciting! It all started when I unwrapped a funny looking present on my birthday. I thought it was some kind of stuffed toy, sort of like an octopus, but it only had three tentacles instead of eight.  It was warm and then I thought it winked at me.  Later that night it woke me up to tell me that he was an alien called Uglesnoo from Pluto.  He also told me he had to leave for the Moon.  I was so sad.  Then Uglesnoo was sad too and told me how his sister Noolong was very sick and that the only thing that could cure her was a repelling crystal from Neptune.  But he has to get a lot of stuff off this list, in order to pay for this repelling crystal.  And then he asked for my help and we ended up traveling to the Moon together in his really cute red spaceship.

2. How is the quest going?

It’s going so well.  First, we went to the Moon and met the Moochins.  They were a little grumpy at first, but we did them a big favor, so they gave us lots of Moo-Bons, the first thing off that list, so that was cool.  Then we traveled to Venus, which was awesome.  The Venutons, the aliens that live there, were a bit scary and we ended up trapped in this cage.  But we managed to get the bliss bubbles and then escape.  In Amelia, the Merballs and the Emerald Cannon, we flew to the planet Mercury. The Merballs, the aliens that live there were friendly at first.  But then an asteroid hit their planet and they blamed us for it! We were in a pickle, but I came up with a brilliant plan to help us get the flying shoes and carry on with our quest.

 3. What’s it like traveling in outer space?

Well it was scary at first.  But I’m getting used to it now.  The universe is huge and even though it’s dark, it’s lit up with loads of stars, like endless strings of fairy lights. I really liked landing on the Moon and then Venus and Mercury.  I think the city of Merabel on Mercury is my favorite place so far.  It’s got all these wild buildings and slides in-between and everything is green. It’s really pretty!

 4. What places have you visited so far?

So far, the Moon, Venus and Mercury.

5. Are you and Uglesnoo good friends?

Yes, we’re definitely good friends.  He’s super nice but a bit crazy.  He’s not always good at letting me know about problems, like if the aliens are friendly or not, or how difficult it will be to get the next item off our list.  So now I ask him lots of questions, so I’ll know what to expect!

6. Where will you go for your next adventure?

The next adventure will be on the Sun. Book four is called, Amelia, the Snapperjacks and the Molten Maze.  I’m not sure how we’ll manage to land on the Sun and we have to get lots of jars of Snapperjack honey.  It might be a bit scary, but I’m sure we’ll end up having another amazing space adventure!
