Mismatched Soulmates

Dr. Barry Hancock Cantrell, a pediatrician, spent his first two years out of medical school in the Peace Corps on Prego Prego, a Pacific island formerly colonized by Italians. During his stay he remained celibate. Upon returning to Los Angeles to join the practice of Dr. Andrew Menton, his cousin, Barry decides he needs to jump into the LA night club scene. This takes him to The Slash/Off! Club where partygoers must dress bizarrely for admittance. Barry figures his white suit serves the purpose for it makes him “look like a refugee from some safari movie.”

At The Slash Barry meets Chelsea, a flamboyant partier with a heart. She rescues the doctor from a loathsome individual who tries to drug his drink with the intent of robbing him. Chelsea drives him back to her place where he can sleep off the drug’s effects. However, things happen to people attracted to each other.

Hours later, after Barry ends his celibacy, the couple discovers that they work in the same medical office with Chelsea being Barry’s receptionist. They decide to end the fling immediately. Or do they?

Jacqueline Diamond’s The Doc’s Double Delivery is a poignant story about a mismatched couple. Barry is looking for a low-key soulmate while Chelsea is a free-spirited take charge woman with a heart of gold. Diamond’s 182-page novel has a well-developed plot, relatable characters, and prose that makes you laugh on one page and cry on another. This reviewer had trouble putting the book down.
