The Fool’s Apprentice: A Murder Mystery
Denrikk lives in the tranquil medieval kingdom of Dragon’s Launch. It’s king, King Greggor, is gentle-hearted, but unfortunately for the citizenry, events are unfolding threatening their peaceful realm.
It starts off with the yearly Apprentice Ceremony where every 16-year-old is apprenticed to a chosen craft. Denrikk is aspiring to become a knight, but on the day of the big ceremony he is absent. When his name is announced to become Sir Roland’s new apprentice, and he’s a no-show, the spot is given to another boy.
Unfortunately for Denrikk, he wakes up that morning in a pile of hay, half naked with a huge lump on his head. When he finally reaches the castle, he discovers his tardiness has pushed an unwanted career on the teen –The Fool’s Apprentice.
Denrikk is assigned to the king’s aging fool, Fumbles, and soon learns a fool’s job is more than juggling and laughing like a hyena. Fumbles teaches the boy new skills which Denrikk will need. A heinous murder will soon take place within the castle walls and the Fool’s Apprentice is the number one suspect.
Author Kelly Hess writes an entertaining who-done-it for young adults that is riveting. He develops believable characters, creates a complex scenario for readers to unravel as we push through 242 pages to uncover the true culprit, which turns out to be a real shocker.
Hess’ writing style is realistic, and the settings are described succinctly and vividly in short strokes. Though written for teens, anyone can enjoy this page turner, The Apprentice’s Fool, no matter their age.
