Meet the Real Christopher Columbus
Find Me in Time opens when middle graders Harry, Keith, Aaron, Emma, and Ashley are playing in the nearby forest when Harry discovers a small treehouse. The book is written in the first person as told by Ashley.
Author L.T. Caton has started a new time travel series for middle school students. In Find Me in Time: Christopher Columbus, she introduces five friends who discover a magical treehouse that has the power to send its inhabitants back in time.
On their first trip, Harry blurts, “I’d really like to find out when this place was built.” The treehouse floor vibrates and shakes and when it stops, the kids smell the scent of freshly cut wood. They remain in the treehouse, but it was brand new and run-away slaves hid in a corner as men on the forest floor search for them.
Whenever the kids are in trouble, the treehouse grabs them back and takes them to their own time. As the pre-teens learn to use the treehouse for time travel they decide to journey back to the time when Christopher Columbus first arrived in the New World.
Caton does an amazing job of describing her scenes, developing characters, and moving the plot at the fast pace middle schoolers love. Also, in this time of literary censorship, she is heroic in describing the appalling actions of Columbus and his men toward the tribe people of Hispaniola.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Find Me in Time tells the truth about the devil who discovered America, so you better add it to your book-ban list. I just hope future Find Me in Time books are as historically accurate and enjoyable reads as this one.
