Exercising During the Pandemic
I’ve been exercising regularly since the summer of my 27th year. Two dear friends persuaded me to go jogging with them on Santa Monica Beach, and since that time, I haven’t returned to my previous coach potato self. That was 45 years ago. The jogging morphed into paddle ball, aerobics, weight training, and hiking. I’ve learned to love the outdoors and can’t let a few days pass without exercising.
Then came the Pandemic. Gyms were closed and I was left to my own devices. So, I walked over two miles a day with my dog, Scribble, but that didn’t seem to be enough. My body ached from sitting around, and jogging was out due to knee issues. In May, my trainer, Lindsay Gross, reopened her gym. I was more than happy to sign up for two sessions a week with my favorite “slave driver.”
Lindsay’s gym, LNG FIT is located in a renovated garage at the rear of her Lake Balboa home. The fitness studio is COVID-19 compliant, clean, and cool. She provides all the essentials—water, towels, and equipment (which you never need to wait for).
Lindsay has a background in competitive bodybuilding and understands that each client requires different treatment to reach their goals. She’ll work with you one-on-one or with you and a friend or two for a shared experience with a shared cost.
Before I met Lindsay, I had other trainers. One man, Jeff, would instruct me on an exercise and then walk away to talk to a friend or answer a phone call. Not Lindsay! She is focused on you the entire length of your workout. For her persistence and determination, I lovingly gave her the sign name of “Slave Driver.” She always makes sure I do my exercises correctly with weight and repetitions I can handle, barely. She makes me use muscles I didn’t even know I had. She’s empathetic, but driven. She’s flexible, but sets parameters respectfully. And she’s kind. Case in point: I’m near deaf and fluent in American Sign Language. Lindsay took the time to learn enough ASL to communicate with me during a workout.
During the early months of the Pandemic, my back went out on me. The chiropractor and acupuncturist had limited affect. However, my favorite slave driver developed exercises to help my problem. I can now walk around without looking and feeling like a zombie and can even bend over to pick up after Scribble without pain.
Lindsay has a personal training goal for her clients: “Provide lifestyle transformations that create long lasting results to your mind, body, and overall health.” I couldn’t agree more. Yes, it definitely helps to be able to have a regular exercise schedule and to have someone to help motivate you and push you.
