Naomi and Ruth

Redeemed, by Rachael C. Duncan is a character study of the Bible’s most iconic women: Ruth and Naomi. Duncan fleshes out the characters far better than the Bible does giving readers a strong sense of their personalities and the genuine love and respect they held for each other. 

Later in the novel, Ruth and Naomi’s relationship steps back a pace when Ruth meets Boaz. As their friendship deepens the author introduces Adara and Kemuel, a loving young childless Bethlehem couple.

Adara and Kemuel live in a culture where barrenness is viewed as evidence of sin. When Ruth and Naomi, two widows, walk into town after a long desert trek, they are immediately distrusted and feel alienated. It is not surprising that Adara and Ruth become best friends.

Redeemed is a heartfelt story about love, faith, perseverance, and hope, even though life seems to have slammed every door shut. It is written from a Christian perspective even though Jesus of Nazareth wouldn’t be born for another 1000 years. The characters’ religious traditions did not reflect Jewish custom either then nor today, showing little concern for Judaism—the religion of Naomi and Ruth. 

Keeping that in mind, Duncan has taken one of the Bible’s most enduring stories and surrounded it with a compelling fictional narrative that emphasizes the transformative power of kindness.
