A Prince and the Pauper Tale for Christmas

Karen McQuestion’s new Christmas novella, A Switch Before Christmas, is set during the Great Depression. The two lead girls at Sheridan Home for Girls, Mary and Jane, are in their early 20s. They clean the home, cook the meals, and do the laundry for the 50 girls taking shelter at the orphanage. It’s a hard life, and with Matron Mrs. Irving gone to visit her sister in Minneapolis, things will become even more trying. The girls have to prepare their charges for the annual inspection by Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan, the home’s benefactors.

This year the Sheridans are in Europe on holiday so it’s up to their daughter, Jacquelyn, to make the hour trip by car to the orphanage. Born into wealth, haughty Jacquelyn knows nothing about the ravages the Depression has on the country. She lives in her own world with a snobbish and superior attitude. Her name is well known in her social circles and people notice her.

Jane must get ready for the Sheridans who will inspect the Sheridan Home for Girls Christmas Eve. What she doesn't suspect is that Jaqueline Sheridan will come in their place and the two young women, Jaqueline and Jane look exactly alike.

To Jacquelyn’s annoyance, on the day before Christmas her older brother, David, awakes her to make her appointment at the girl’s home on time. Eddie, the son of Mildred the housekeeper, is tasked to drive her to the home.

The inspection at the Sheridan Girls’ Home goes well, but the girl Eddie describes as her doppelganger, Jane, is dressed in rags. How could anyone think for a second, they look like twins? To prove Eddie wrong, Jacquelyn convinces Jane to exchange clothes. She knew Eddie, who she grew up with, would detect the difference immediately.

But he doesn’t! And so begins A Switch Before Christmas. McQuestion’s writing style is fast paced and filled with emotional scenes that will make readers laugh and cry.  It’s a heartwarming story showing how events can change a person, even within a day. A Switch Before Christmas is a book perfect for the Christmas season and any time of year, too.
